If the camera fails to function as expected, check the list of common problems below before consulting your retailer or Nikon-authorized service representative.

Power and Setting Issues

Problem Cause/Solution

The camera is on but does not respond.

  • Wait for recording to end.
  • If the problem persists, turn the camera off.
    If the camera does not turn off, remove and reinsert the battery or batteries or, if you are using an AC adapter, disconnect and reconnect the AC adapter.
    Note that although any data currently being recorded will be lost, data that have already been recorded will not be affected by removing or disconnecting the power source.

    Turning Off the Camera

  • The buttons of the camera are disabled during remote photography. To operate the buttons of the camera, exit remote photography.
  • Buttons can be operated only to turn off the camera while a live image is output.
The camera does not turn on.

The battery is exhausted.

Charging the Battery

The Battery

The camera turns off without warning.
  • The camera automatically turns off to save power (auto off function).

    Turning Off the Camera

  • Depending on the status of the camera, it turns off after a specific time regardless of the auto off setting.
  • The camera and battery may not work properly at low temperatures.

    The Battery

  • The inside of the camera has become hot. Leave the camera off until the inside of the camera has cooled, and then try turning it on again.
The camera becomes hot. The camera may become hot when used for an extended period of time such as to shoot movies, or when used in a hot environment; this is not a malfunction.
The camera beeps three times.
Date and time of recording are not correct.
  • When the camera is turned on for the first time, the camera clock is set to “01/01/2017 00:00”. Set the date and time of the camera clock by selecting SnapBridge 360/170 M c Camera tab M Camera settings M Date and time.
  • The camera clock is not as accurate as ordinary watches or clocks. Periodically compare the time of the camera clock with that of a more accurate timepiece and reset as required.

The camera does not turn off automatically.

The camera may not turn off automatically depending on its state.

Auto Off

The battery inserted in the camera cannot be charged.
  • Confirm all connections.

    Charging the Battery

  • When connected to a computer, the camera may not charge for any of the reasons described below.

    • SnapBridge 360/170 M c Camera tab M Camera settings M Charge by computer is set to Off.

      Charge by Computer

    • Battery charging may stop when the computer enters sleep mode.
    • Depending on the computer specifications, settings, and status, battery charging may not be possible.
Cannot select a setting/Selected setting is disabled.
  • Certain menu items are unavailable depending on the setting.
  • A function that restricts the selected function is enabled.
The camera settings reset.

The clock battery is exhausted; all settings were restored to their default values. Configure the camera settings again.

  • The internal clock battery is used to power the camera clock and to retain certain settings. Charging time of the clock battery takes about 10 hours when you insert the battery into the camera or connect the AC adapter (available separately) to the camera, and the clock battery operates for several days even after the camera battery is removed.

Shooting Issues

Cannot take pictures or record movies.
  • Check the lamp display.

  • Insert a memory card with sufficient free space.

  • Disconnect the HDMI cable or USB cable.
  • During remote photography, images cannot be captured only with the camera. Exit remote photography.
  • Buttons can be operated only to turn off the camera while a live image is output.
Images are blurred.

Use a tripod to stabilize the camera (using the self-timer at the same time is more effective).

Self-timer

Images appear smeared.

The lenses, lens protectors, or underwater lens protectors are dirty. Clean them.

Cleaning and Storage

Colors are unnatural.

White balance is not adjusted properly.

Randomly spaced bright pixels (“noise”) appear in image. The subject is dark and the shutter speed is too slow or ISO sensitivity is too high.
Images are too dark or too bright.

Saving images takes time.

Saving images may take time when shooting using SnapBridge 360/170 M c Camera tab M Camera settings M Shooting options M Shooting options M Active D-Lighting.

Active D-Lighting

A ring-shaped belt or rainbow-colored stripe appears on the SnapBridge 360/170 screen or images.
  • When shooting with backlighting or when a very strong light source (such as sunlight) is in the frame, a ring-shaped belt or rainbow-colored stripe (ghosting) may occur.
  • The lenses, lens protectors, or underwater lens protectors are dirty. Clean them.

Playback Issues

Problem Cause/Solution
The point of view cannot be moved during playback.

Play back files using SnapBridge 360/170 or KeyMission 360/170 Utility. In other software, the single image that was processed in the camera is displayed. You cannot move the point of view during playback.

Playing Back Images Saved in the Camera/Transferring Images to a Smart Device

Playing Back Images on a Computer

Playback images are not displayed on TV.
  • A computer is connected to the camera.
  • The memory card contains no images.
Images saved in the camera are not displayed on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

If the number of images saved on a memory card in the camera exceeds 10,000, images captured thereafter may not be displayed in a connected device.

  • Reduce the number of images saved on the memory card. Copy the necessary images to a computer, etc.

Remote Control Issues

SnapBridge 360/170 Issues

  • Perform pairing.

    Preparing for Pairing

  • If SnapBridge 360/170 M c Camera tab M Camera settings M Network menu M Bluetooth M Send while off is set to No, turn on the camera or set it to Yes.
  • Check that the B icon is displayed in SnapBridge 360/170 M a Connect screen. The B icon is not displayed when the camera is off or immediately after it is turned on.
  • If the camera is connected to a remote control, switch the connection to the smart device.

    Switching from Remote Control to Smart Device

Cannot upload images to a smart device that has a wireless connection established.
  • Perform the operations described below when uploading automatically.

    • Select SnapBridge 360/170 M a Connect tab M turn on Auto download.
    • Select SnapBridge 360/170 M c Camera tab M Camera settings M Network menu M Send while shooting M set Still images to Yes.
  • To automatically send images captured using remote photography, tap g on the shooting screen, and then turn on Download on the screen that is displayed.
Cannot perform Remote photography or Download pictures.
  • Enable Wi-Fi on the smart device.
  • If you cannot perform Remote photography or Download pictures even after pairing and establishing a Wi-Fi connection, you may be able to solve the problem with the operations below:

    • Switch the tabs in SnapBridge 360/170.
    • Exit and launch SnapBridge 360/170 again.
    • Unpair, remove the device, and then re-pair.

      Unpairing a Smart Device

Wi-Fi is disconnected and the Wi-Fi connection prompt is displayed again.
  • Wi-Fi may get disconnected in the situations below. Follow the on-screen instructions to establish a Wi-Fi connection again.
    • Switching to a tab other than the c Camera tab.
    • Being nearby a device that generates strong electromagnetic radiation.
  • If live view is left on during remote photography under iOS 11.3 to 12.1, the wireless connection will eventually end, returning you to the c Camera tab. We recommend that you either shoot with live view disabled or end live view immediately after framing each shot.
File cannot be played back.
  • This app may not be able to play back images saved with another make or model of digital camera.
  • This app cannot play back movies recorded with another make or model of digital camera.
  • This app may not be able to play back data edited on a computer.

Cannot edit image.

  • Some images cannot be edited.
  • This app is unable to edit images captured with other cameras.
Colored stripes appear in the shooting screen of SnapBridge 360/170.

Colored stripes may appear when shooting subjects with repeating patterns (such as window blinds); this is not a malfunction.

The colored stripes will not appear in captured images or recorded movies.
