Merge Pictures Taken Using Pixel Shift

If you choose an image taken using pixel shift and click [Pixel shift merge] in the toolbar, the software will detect the sequence and merge those images into a single file (Pixel Shift Merge).

  • The resolution of merged pixel shift images may change depending on the shooting conditions and the number of images generated after the merge.

Using Pixel Shift Merge

  1. Display the folder containing the sequence to merge, then click [Pixel shift merge] in the toolbar.

  2. In the [Pixel Shift Merge] dialog, adjust settings such as "Merge mode" (number of generated images) and "Chromatic aberration correction".

    Select the sequence to merge. If there are multiple sequences in the view area, they can be selected and merged at the same time.
    [Merge mode]
    Select the number of images to generate after merging. The number of images that can be generated depends on the number of images to be merged (0 Number of Images Generated).
    [Chromatic aberration correction]
    Select [On] to reduce lateral color aberration.
    [Destination]
    Choose the destination folder for the generated images.
    [File name]
    Name the generated files. Click [Naming options] to select how files are named.
  3. Click [Start] to save the combined image (merged pixel shift image) in the destination folder.

Number of Images Generated

  • The table below indicates the number of images that can be generated according to the number of images to be merged.

    8 1 Merging is performed once to generate 1 image from 8 images.
    2 Merging is performed twice to generate 2 images from 4 images.

    Merging is performed once to generate 1 image from 16 images.

    • The resulting height and width are double that of the original image.
    4 Merging is performed four times to generate 4 images from 4 images.
    32 1

    Merging is performed once to generate 1 image from 32 images.

    • The resulting height and width are double that of the original image.

    Merging is performed twice to generate 2 images from 16 images.

    • The resulting height and width are double that of the original image.
    4 Merging is performed four times to generate 4 images from 8 images.
    8 Merging is performed eight times to generate 8 images from 4 images.
  • When multiple sequences of images taken using pixel shift are selected at the same time, it is only possible to generate numbers of images that are available to all selected sequences. For example, if a sequence of 8 images and a sequence of 16 images are selected at the same time, only 1 image can be generated. If a sequence of 8 images and a sequence of 32 images are selected at the same time, you can select whether 1 or 2 images will be generated.

Bright Pixels

Pixel shift merges may cause bright spots in the generated image.

  • We recommend that you perform [Pixel mapping] in the camera menu before taking pictures using pixel shift.
  • If unwanted bright pixels appear in the image, you can remove them with [Retouch Brush] in the adjustments palette (0 The Retouch Brush).

Cautions: Merged Pixel Shift Images

Image files generated using pixel shift merge cannot be used for the following purposes.

  • Slide show playback
  • Video creation
  • Uploading to NIKON IMAGE SPACE

Merged Pixel Shift Images

  • Merged pixel shift images are saved in NEFX format (extension “.nefx”).
  • The thumbnail is marked .

Merging HLG-Enabled Images

When a picture taken using pixel shift with HLG selected for tone mode is merged using NX Studio, the tone mode of the merged pixel shift image (.nefx) that is generated will also be HLG.
