Step 3: Import Pictures to the Album

Import pictures to the album from the camera or from elsewhere on the smart device. Pictures can be imported in the album list and gallery view (single-frame view included).

Cautions: Analyze on Import

Note the following when using deep-learning-based picture analysis (0Album Settings):

  • The success of image analysis varies with such factors as subject size and brightness.
  • When analyzing pictures featuring human portrait subjects, the algorithm will classify faces as “in focus” if they are not markedly out of focus.
  • NEF (RAW) pictures are not subject to deep-learning-based picture analysis.
  • Pictures imported from smart devices or that have been edited in single-frame view using NX MobileAir are subject to analysis.
  • Pictures imported with [Analyze on import] disabled cannot be analyzed after import.

Synchronizing Clocks

To synchronize the camera clock with the clock in the smart device, tap the (settings) button in the album list, select [App options], and enable [Sync clocks]. The camera clock will not, however, be set to the time zone selected on the smart device.

FTP Upload

To automatically upload imported pictures to an FTP server, enable [Upload automatically after import] in the album settings display (0Album Settings).

  • To automatically resize pictures for FTP upload, select [FTP upload settings] in the album settings display and enable [Resize files (JPEG)]. This feature is available with JPEG pictures only.
  • The display in the camera monitor shows upload status and alerts you if some pictures failed to upload ( Z 9 “C” firmware version 4.00 or later).

    • FTP: Upload of pictures from the smart device to the FTP server is in progress.
    • FTPC: The smart device failed to connect to the FTP server.
    • FTPWC: The smart device was able to connect to the FTP server but one or more pictures could not be uploaded.
    • FTPCWC: The smart device could not connect to the FTP server and one or more pictures could not be uploaded.
    • WC: The smart device is not currently connected to the FTP server and one or more pictures could not be uploaded.

Duplicate Pictures

Pictures with the same file name, file size, and date and time of recording are treated as duplicates. Duplicates of existing pictures will not be imported.

Dual-Slot Cameras

If the camera is equipped with two memory card slots, pictures will be imported first from the card in Slot 1 (or primary slot) and next from the card in Slot 2 (or secondary slot).

Importing Pictures from a Camera

Pictures can be imported from the camera using any of the following three methods.

  • Via USB: Connect the camera to the smart device via USB and import existing pictures from the camera memory card.
  • Via remote photography: Connect the camera to the smart device via USB and import pictures as they are taken.
  • Via the sync button: Connect the camera to the smart device via USB and import pictures by tapping the (sync) button.

Importing Pictures from Within the Smart Device

Pictures can also be imported from elsewhere on the smart device (0 Importing Pictures from Within the Smart Device).

Importing Pictures via USB

A confirmation dialog will be displayed when the camera is connected to the smart device via USB; tap [OK] to import pictures from the camera memory card.

  • The camera connection status icon at the top of the display flashes while import is in progress.
  • To interrupt import, tap the (cancel) button at the top right corner of the display. Pictures already imported will be stored in the album, but import of any remaining pictures will be canceled.

Import on Connection

If [Import] is selected for [Import when camera connected] in the settings for the current album, import will begin automatically when the camera is connected; a confirmation dialog will not be displayed (0Album Settings). To disable import on connection, select [Do not import].

Importing Deleted Pictures

If [Re-import deleted pictures] is disabled, NX MobileAir will not re-import pictures that remain on the camera memory card after being deleted from the album (0The Settings Display).

  • To re-import pictures that have been deleted from the album, tap the (settings) button in the album list, select [App options], and enable [Re-import deleted pictures] before connecting the camera to the smart device.
  • Regardless of the settings selected for [Re-import deleted pictures], deleted pictures will be re-imported on connection once 30 days have passed.

Selecting Pictures for Import on the Camera

To import only selected pictures and reduce the amount of data stored on the smart device, protect pictures on the camera prior to import and select [Protected RAW and JPEG pictures] or [Protected JPEG pictures] for [Pictures for import] in the NX MobileAir album settings display. NX MobileAir will also import any pictures of the selected type or types that are marked for protection on the camera while it is connected to the smart device.

Importing Pictures as They Are Taken

Pictures shot while the camera is connected to the smart device via USB will automatically be imported as they are taken.

  • The pictures will automatically be imported to the selected album.
  • Newly-taken pictures will not be imported to NX MobileAir if it is running in the background. Before shooting, be sure to check that NX MobileAir is running in the foreground.
  • The camera connection status icon at the top of the display flashes while import is in progress.
  • To interrupt import, tap the (cancel) button at the top right corner of the display.

Cable Disconnected?

If the display was locked before the cable was disconnected and remains locked until the cable is reconnected, the pictures taken while the cable was disconnected can be imported by tapping [OK] in the confirmation dialog displayed when the cable is reconnected.

Missing Pictures

To import pictures that were not downloaded when they were taken (because, for example, NX MobileAir was running in the background while shooting was in progress), tap the (sync) button while the smart device and camera are connected via USB (0Using the Sync Button).

Importing Protected Pictures

If [Protected RAW and JPEG pictures] or [Protected JPEG pictures] is selected for [Pictures for import] in the NX MobileAir album settings display, pictures will not be imported automatically as they are taken. Instead, NX MobileAir will import pictures marked for protection on the camera.

  • Do not protect pictures while the camera’s memory card access lamp is lit. Pictures protected before they have been fully saved to the memory card will not be imported. The affected pictures will be imported if protection is removed and then added again.

Using the Sync Button

A (sync) button appears to the left of the topmost album when the camera and smart device are connected via USB. Tap the button to import any pictures from the camera memory card that were not included in previous imports.

You have now completed import of pictures from the camera. If auto FTP upload is enabled, the pictures will automatically be uploaded to the FTP server. To upload pictures manually, proceed to Step 4 (0 Step 4: Select Pictures in the Gallery). For information on the other options available for managing pictures in gallery view, see “What You Can Do in Gallery View” (0 What You Can Do in Gallery View).

Importing Pictures from Within the Smart Device

Pictures stored elsewhere on the smart device can be imported into albums in NX MobileAir.

  1. Tap the (menu) button at the top right corner of the gallery display and select [Import from smart device].

  2. Select pictures for import in the Android file-selection display.

    • Pictures can be imported one at a time by tapping them in the display.
    • You can also opt to select all pictures using the menu at the right side of the display above the picture list.

Cautions: Importing Pictures from Within the Smart Device

  • NX MobileAir can import JPEG and NEF RAW pictures.
  • The option selected for [Pictures for import] in the album settings display does not apply to pictures imported from within the smart device.

Canceling File Selection

To cancel file selection and exit the file-selection display, tap the back button on the smart device or use a standard gesture such as swiping right on the display. Repeat as necessary to return to the top of the folder hierarchy and exit to NX MobileAir.

Camera USB Settings

Before connecting the camera to an iPhone, select [iPhone] for [USB] in the camera network menu (or in the camera setup menu, in the case of the D6 and Z 7II/Z 6II).

A confirmation dialog will be displayed if the camera firmware is not up to date. Note that the camera clock will not be set to the time zone selected on the smart device.

Duplicate Pictures

Pictures with the same file name, file size, and date and time of recording are treated as duplicates. Duplicates of existing pictures will not be imported.

Dual-Slot Cameras

Note that pictures will not be imported from the card in Slot 2 or the secondary slot if [Backup] is selected for [Role played by card in Slot 2] or [Secondary slot function] in the camera photo shooting menu. If an option other than [Backup] is selected, pictures will be imported first from the card in Slot 1 (primary slot) and then from the card in Slot 2 (secondary slot).

Caution: Foregrounding NX MobileAir

Backgrounding NX MobileAir ends the connection to the camera, and simply foregrounding the app is not in itself sufficient to enable import of pictures either as they are taken or via the sync button. The connection can be restored by returning to the album list or gallery view, allowing pictures to be imported in much the same manner as when the USB cable is reconnected.
