Downloading Optional Picture Controls

  Thank you for purchasing Nikon products. This guide describes how to download the optional picture controls.


  System Requirements
Before downloading optional picture controls, be sure your system meets the following requirements:		  
 
OS Preinstalled versions of Windows Vista 32-bit Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Enterprise/Ultimate editions (Service Pack 1) or Windows XP Home Edition/Professional (Service Pack 3)
Hard-disk space 5 MB free
RAM 32 MB
Miscellaneous USB port
 
     
  Save where otherwise noted, the screenshots in this guide are from Windows Vista.  


Get ready
  To upgrade the camera firmware, you will need:
• The camera
• Card reader and a computer, or else a computer with an internal memory card slot
 
*  For the camera equipped with Mass Storage, choosing Mass Storage from USB option allows you to connect the camera to the computer by using the USB cable.
• One of the following power sources:
  — An AC adapter
  — Fully charged battery
• A Nikon-approved memory card
• The camera manual
 
*  All data in memory card get erased when it is initialized. Please copy all necessary data in the card (e.g. in the computer) before initializing the memory card.


Download and extract the Optional Picture Controls
  1 Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select New > Folder from the menu that appears. Name the folder as desired.
 
2 Click the I agree - Begin download link on the download site and download the optional picture controls to the folder created in Step -1.
 
3 When the downloaded .exe file is double clicked it will get automatically extracted.
*  The file name and numbers of files differ depending on the downloaded optional picture controls and the model.
 
A dialog similar to that shown at right will be displayed; click OK. In Windows Vista, a “User Account Control” dialog will then be displayed; click Allow.
 
When the files are extracted, a folder by the name “NIKON” is created. Please, confirm that inside the “NIKON” folder that there is the optional picture controls (“.NOP”) file.

Copy the Picture Controls to a memory card
  To copy the optional picture controls to memory card, a computer is used.
 
1 Insert the already formatted memory card into card reader connected to the computer.
*  For the camera equipped with Mass Storage, choosing Mass Storage from USB option allows you to connect the camera to the computer by using the USB cable.
• If Nikon Transfer is installed, it will start automatically; to exit, select Exit from the File menu.
Windows Vista
Under Windows Vista, an AutoPlay dialog may be displayed. Click .
   
Windows XP
Under Windows XP, a Removable Disk dialog may be displayed. Click Cancel.
 
2 The camera will appear in “Computer” (Windows Vista) or “My Computer” (Windows XP) as a removable disk. Copy the “NIKON” folder created in Step -3 to the removable disk.
Drive letters may differ  
 
Important
Copy the “NIKON” folder directly to the top (root) level of the removable disk. The camera will not recognize the optional Picture Controls if the “NIKON” folder is inside another folder.
 
Once the copying has finished, open the “NIKON” folder and check that “.NOP” files are all copied.
 
Note:  The number of exposures remaining will decrease when optional picture controls are copied to the memory card.
 
3 Ejecting the memory card from the card reader. Right click on the “Removable Disk” icon. Select Eject and remove the memory card.


Copy the Picture Controls to the camera
 
Note:  This explanation is based on D3.
 
1 Insert the memory card containing the optional picture controls into slot 1.
   
2 Turn the camera on.
   
3 Press the button and select Load/save for the Manage Picture Control option in the shooting menu.
*  In the case of D3, insert the memory card into slot 1. This is not displayed when it is inserted into slot 2.
 
4 Select Copy to camera.
 
5 Highlight an optional picture control and press .
*  The file name and numbers of files differ depending on the downloaded optional picture controls.
 
6 Highlight a destination for the optional Picture Control and press . Any Picture Control currently stored in the selected destination will be overwritten.
 
Settings for the optional Picture Control can be viewed using the Save/edit option in the Manage Picture Control menu. See the camera manual for details.

This completes the process of downloading and installing optional Picture Controls.
